Former Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende to receive honorary degree at Hope College today

Jan Peter Balkenende, former prime minister of the Netherlands, will deliver an address at Hope College and receive an honorary degree from Hope today.

Balkenende will speak under the title ?Europe: risk or opportunity? Economic developments, financial challenges and European values? at 4 p.m. in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall, 263 College Ave.

The public is invited to the lecture. Admission is free.

He will receive a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) degree from Hope during a banquet later in the day. Attendance at the banquet is by invitation only.

Hope College said in a release, the prime minister is being honored in recognition of his distinguished service to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and for his emphasis on Christian principles as a component of good government.

Balkenende was prime minister and minister of general affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands July 2002 to October 2010.

His tenure as prime minister saw reforms to social security, pre-pension facilities, public health and deregulation. He also played an active international role in European Council during the second half of 2004, and in the United Nations, with a special emphasis on issues like sustainable development, Millennium Development Goals and the World Trade Organization.

He is now a professor at the Erasmus School of Law of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is also a partner at a Rotterdam firm, Ernst and Young.
