Automotive home brew antennas for 2m/70cm bands?

Homebrewing antennas is cool but the reason not many antennas like this are homebrewed is they're sooooo cheap to buy, already built, with conforming bases and mounts like the NMO.

For 2m/70cm, pretty much "nothing" beats an NMO mount, and to fabricate something like that would cost more than simply buying one which is likely to work better.

The Larsen NMO 2/70B is a great antenna that will last a lifetime and is readily available via many distributors: http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...m/larsenm.html

The Larsen NMO-K NMO mount matches that and comes complete with 17' of coax and a connector for the rig: http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...m/larsenx.html

One could try copying these but I suspect that would cost a lot more than what these sell for; and the "mount" (interface between the antenna and the automobile) is critical, especially on 70cm. Hard to find something that would work as well electrically as the NMO and also be waterproof, weatherproof, vibration proof, shock resistant and last forever.
