(AP) ? Sony's new alliance with scandal-tarnished Olympus will focus on producing endoscopes and other surgical tools packed with the Japanese electronic maker's three-dimensional imaging and super-clear "4K" display technologies.

Sony Corp. President Kazuo Hirai said it's not clear when the alliance's first products will become available. He acknowledged that medical equipment requires special regulatory approval that will take longer and be a learning curve for Sony whose expertise is in gadgets and movies.

"This is a challenge in a new sector," Hirai told reporters at the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce in a joint press conference with Olympus Corp. President Hiroyuki Sasa. "There was a lot of talk on whether we could go at it alone."

But Sony decided it couldn't and felt that risks could be lowered if the two Japanese companies joined forces in the effort to turn medical equipment into one of the pillars of Sony's sprawling business, Hirai said.

Sony's empire includes consumer electronics, movies, music, games and banking. The company's sheer size and its apparent inability to produce long promised "synergies" among its divisions have often been criticized.

Technology such as 3D and the futuristic displays known as 4K have not yet produced big results in consumer electronics products such as TVs. TV sets with 3D images require viewers to wear special glasses and haven't caught on. Sony has shown a 4K TV image, which is more fine and dazzling than high-definition TV, but it is unclear whether such an expensive product will catch on.

The alliance, announced Friday, calls for Sony to invest 50 billion yen ($640 million) to become the top shareholder in Olympus, with an 11 percent stake.

Olympus needs to shore up its finances after covering up massive losses dating back to the 1990s. The scandal surfaced only after its British chief executive Michael Woodford turned whistleblower and raised questions about dubious investments. Woodford was later fired.

Hirai said Sony is aiming to control more than 20 percent of the medical-equipment-for-surgery market by 2020, when the sector is expected to grow to 330 billion yen ($4 billion).

The companies are planning also to cooperate in the digital camera area, where they have been rivals. Sasa said cost savings would be likely by sharing parts.

Of Sony's 50 billion yen ($640 million) investment, about half will go into developing endoscopes equipped with 3D and 4K technology, Sasa said.

Olympus is the world's biggest maker of endoscopes, which are special devices that enter the body to look inside organs and can be used to carry out surgery. Olympus is also known for its cameras.

Sony needs a turnaround after reporting losses for four straight years as it fell behind in portable music players, flat-panel TVs and smartphones. Sony's red ink for the latest fiscal year through March was the worst in its 66-year history.

Olympus and its three former executives pleaded guilty in a Tokyo court last week on charges of falsifying financial reports, involving elaborate schemes using overseas bank accounts, paper companies and transactions controlled behind-the-scenes ? all to keep massive losses off company books.

Goodell: Fans 'deserve better' than distractions

NEW YORK (AP) ? NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell tells fans "you deserve better" than games worked by replacement officials.

In an open letter released by the league Friday, a day after the regular officials returned to the field, Goodell says: "I regret we were not able to secure an agreement sooner in the process and avoid the unfortunate distractions to the game."

The officials were locked out in June with the two sides unable to reach a new collective bargaining agreement. Replacements were used for three weeks to increasing criticism from players, coaches and fans. The dispute reached deafening levels when a missed call cost the Green Bay Packers a win against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.

Goodell tells fans the new contract will improve officiating and commends the replacements for their dedication.

Bioengineers design rapid diagnostic tests inspired by nature

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? By mimicking nature's own sensing mechanisms, bioengineers at UC Santa Barbara and University of Rome Tor Vergata have designed inexpensive medical diagnostic tests that take only a few minutes to perform. Their findings may aid efforts to build point-of-care devices for quick medical diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), allergies, autoimmune diseases, and a number of other diseases. The new technology could dramatically impact world health, according to the research team.

The rapid and easy-to-use diagnostic test consists of a nanometer-scale DNA "switch" that can quickly detect antibodies specific to a wide range of diseases. The research is described in an article published this month in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The design was created by the research group of Kevin W. Plaxco, a professor in UCSB's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He noted that, despite the power of current diagnostic tests, a significant limitation is that they still require complex laboratory procedures. "Patients typically must wait for days or even weeks to receive the results of most STD tests," said Plaxco. "The blood sample has to be transported to the lab, its content analyzed by trained personnel, and the results sent back to the doctor's office. If we can move testing to the point of care, it eliminates the lag between testing and treatment, which would enhance the effectiveness of medical interventions, and, for infectious diseases like STDs, reduce transmission."

The key breakthrough underlying this new technology came from observing nature. "All creatures, from bacteria to humans, monitor their environments using amazing 'molecular nanoswitches' that signal the presence of a specific target by changing their structure," said Alexis Vall?e-B?lisle, a postdoctoral scholar and co-first author of the study. "For example, on the surface of our cells, there are millions of receptor proteins that detect various molecules by switching from an 'off state' to an 'on state.' The beauty of these switches is that they are able to work directly in very complex environments such as whole blood."

Plaxco's research group teamed with Francesco Ricci, professor at University of Rome Tor Vergata and co-first author of the paper, to build synthetic molecular switches that signal their state via a change in electric current. This change in current can be measured using inexpensive electronics similar to those in the home glucose test meter used by diabetics to check their blood sugar. Using these "nature-inspired" nanoswitches, the researchers were able to detect anti-HIV antibodies directly in whole blood in less than five minutes.

"A great advantage of these electrochemical nanoswitches is that their sensing principle can be generalized to many different targets, allowing us to build inexpensive devices that could detect dozens of disease markers in less than five minutes in the doctor's office or even at home," said Ricci.

The authors noted that it may take several years to bring the devices to the market.

The additional co-authors are Fan Xia of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China; and Takanori Uzawa of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan.

This work was funded by the National Institute of Health, the Fond Qu?b?cois de la Recherche sur la Nature et les Technologies; the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) project "Futuro in Ricerca;" and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, through the Grand Challenges Explorations Grant.

(AP) ? J.K. Rowling launched her long-anticipated first book for adults to publishing hype, mixed reviews and an enthusiastic welcome from Harry Potter's legion of now grown-up fans.

The lines were shorter and the wizard costumes were missing Thursday but "The Casual Vacancy" appeared to some of the same fanfare that greeted each Potter tome, with stores wheeling out crates of the books precisely at 8 a.m. as part of a finely honed marketing strategy.

Almost 1,000 people were attending a reading Thursday evening at London's Southbank Centre, most of them clutching copies of the book to be signed by the author.

Many were young adults who had grown up with Rowling's boy wizard and wanted to see what the author would do next.

"She's been such an inspiration to everyone," said 18-year-old university student Milly Anderson. "She's not just influenced people's childhoods ? she's molded them."

Anderson said she was loving "The Casual Vacancy" ? once she'd got over the change from reading stories about Harry and his Hogwarts chums.

"There's swearing and sex," she said. "It's a bit of a shock."

Published five years after the release of the last Potter book, "The Casual Vacancy" is already at No. 1 on Amazon's U.S. chart. Betting house William Hill put 2-1 odds on it outselling "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which sold 2.6 million copies in Britain on its first day.

A story of ambition, envy and rivalry set in the fictional English village of Pagford, the novel recounts the civic warfare sparked when the unexpected death of a town official leaves a vacancy on its governing body. Characters set on a collision course range from the affluent lawyer Miles Mollison to the Weedons, a ramshackle clan living in The Fields, the run-down housing project on the edge of town.

Many of the early buyers were Harry Potter fans who, like the author, have moved on to more adult fare.

"I just like how much excitement there is about a book," said 23-year-old Grace Proctor, a "massive" Potter fan who was first to buy the book at one London store.

"I think there are going to be people who will hate it just because they can hate it," she said. "But she's such an amazing writer, I don't think she can go wrong."

Rowling has said she was aiming for Dickensian sweep in the multi-character saga, whose doses of sex, satire and swearing mark a distinct departure from wholesome Harry.

Reviews have been mixed. The Associated Press judged it a challenging but rewarding read full of emotion and heart. AP's Deepti Hajela said while its troubled characters mean "this isn't a book that's easy to fall in love with ... what could have been an unreadable story becomes something else in Rowling's hands, thanks to her gift of being able to make her characters complex and really, just human."

But The New York Times' influential book critic, Michiko Kakutani, was damning.

"The real-life world she has limned in these pages is so willfully banal, so depressingly cliched that 'The Casual Vacancy' is not only disappointing ? it's dull," she said.

The Guardian newspaper's reviewer, Theo Tait, said it was "no masterpiece, but it's not bad at all: intelligent, workmanlike, and often funny."

The Independent's Boyd Tonkin found the sometimes "long-winded and laborious" writing soared when Rowling focused on her teenage characters.

Others, though, felt the lack of likable characters might alienate readers. The Daily Mail reviewer Jan Moir also slammed Rowling's stark focus on Pagford's haves and have-nots as the work of a "left-leaning demagogue" painting "a bleak and rather one-sided vision of life in modern England."

It's likely nothing Rowling publishes will ever match the success of the Potter books, which have sold more than 450 million copies around the world.

But booksellers are confident "The Casual Vacancy" will be one of the year's best-sellers, whatever reviewers say.

"A lot of children have grown up with Harry Potter. They're now adults who love books," said Susan Sinclair, divisional manager for the Foyles bookstore chain.

"I think it's going to be a really big seller at Christmas. It'll be an easy gift ? but also a good one."

In this Sept. 21, 2012 photo, passengers line up at a check-in counter of Spring Airline at Hongqiao Airport in Shanghai, China. A budget airline boom that is sweeping Asia is leaving Chinese travelers behind. From almost none a decade ago, the region now has more than 50 low cost carriers. But China's government still keeps tight control of the rapidly growing airline industry. Even for tickets on Shanghai-based Spring Airlines, considered China's only discount carrier, "their price is just as same as the big airlines" during high season, Ren Hong, a 37-year-old who runs an export business and also blogs about her travels in her spare time, said. (AP Photo/Eugene Hoshiko)

(AP) ? When businesswoman Ren Hong flew home after a recent trip to Beijing on state-owned Air China, she was hoping for a decent inflight meal to tide her over until she got back to the spicy cuisine of her native Sichuan province.

The airline's meager offering, which was little more than "just bread," was a galling experience for Ren who wondered why the carrier didn't cut both the pretense of full service and the price of the ticket.

Her gripe highlights how Chinese travelers have been left out of the massive budget airline boom that has swept Asia. From almost none a decade ago, the region now has more than 50 low cost carriers. The fast growth of no-frills airlines such as AirAsia and the slew of recent start-ups including Singapore's Scoot and AirAsia Japan underline surging demand in the region for affordable air travel. The rise of budget carriers in Asia follows similar expansion in Europe and North America in previous decades.

But in China, where the government still keeps tight control of the rapidly growing airline industry, three big state-owned carriers dominate. Aviation authorities' efforts to shield them, as well as keep the industry from growing too rapidly and compromising safety, mean travelers like Ren pay up to twice as much.

"I've found that flight tickets domestically sometimes are more expensive than the international ones due to monopolization and less competition," said Ren, a 37-year-old who runs an export business and also blogs about her travels in her spare time. Even for tickets on Shanghai-based Spring Airlines, considered China's only discount carrier, "their price is just as same as the big airlines" during high season, she said.

While Chinese travelers are benefiting from foreign budget airlines flying to some Chinese cities, analysts and consultants say government policy measures are preventing the domestic aviation market from opening up too quickly. China's domestic market is one of the biggest prizes in Asia's travel industry, with 264 million passengers last year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of China, which forecasts the number will grow about six-fold by 2030.

"The domestic market in China has more or less remained a fortress," Xiaowen Fu, an aviation expert at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said at a recent conference in Macau organized by the Sydney-based CAPA-Center for Aviation.

Like other essential industries in China, the policy measures are aimed at protecting the chosen few national champions from too much competition. China's three major state-owned airlines, Beijing-based Air China Ltd., Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines Corp. and Guangzhou-based China Southern Airlines Ltd., carried 191 million passengers among them in 2011. But in the first half of 2012 their profits collapsed because of higher fuel prices and foreign currency losses. The rest of the market is divided between smaller state carriers ? some owned by the big three ? and a handful of private operators.

An unsurprising outcome of the cossetted state airline industry is a perpetual sense of grievance among travelers at poor service and lack of choice.

"The food on Chinese airlines is worse and more basic than it is on the international airlines," said 25-year-old Li Peng, who recently quit his job in Beijing to travel overseas for a year.

"And when the flight is delayed, I never get any feedback after my complaints. Many flights are delayed more than two hours" he said. "I do wish there were more budget airlines, especially in China," he said.

China's civil aviation policy hinders the country's budget airline industry in two ways, according to experts. First, it makes it almost impossible for a private company to start a new airline. Second, the policy limits growth by existing airlines, including state-run carriers, through measures including requiring approvals for new airplanes and routes.

For airlines operating in China, "they've got constraints whether it be on operating strategy, or what they're allowed to do at the airports, or how they're allowed to recruit pilots, or what the airport charges," said Con Korfiatis, director of Flight Ideas Consulting. "So the low-cost carrier explosion in China is still being constrained."

In contrast, discount airlines continue to spread their wings elsewhere in Asia. Three started flying in Japan this year, including Peach Aviation and local ventures from Malaysia's AirAsia and Australia's Jetstar. Also taking flight in 2012 were Singapore Airlines' Scoot, Thai Airways International's Thai Smile and AirAsia Philippines. Next year, Indonesia's Lion Air plans to start flights on Malindo Airways, a low-cost Malaysia operation, the company said earlier this month.

Even China Eastern Airlines Co. is joining in, although its low-cost carrier is a joint venture with Qantas subsidiary Jetstar that will be based in Hong Kong rather than mainland China.

The Civil Aviation Authority of China hinted in July that it would support budget airlines by loosening price controls. But director Li Jiaxiang stopped short of announcing any major policy reforms.

The measures aren't just aimed at China's private or discount carriers ? they also apply to China's state-owned carriers. Analysts say policies are designed to prevent unfettered growth. Authorities clamped down following a spell of supercharged growth during which the number of passengers expanded by 40 percent in 2003-2004. Such red-hot growth puts tremendous strain on pilots and infrastructure such as air traffic control and airports, especially on heavily congested air routes between major Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

"The market is already growing at 11-16 percent domestically at average fares," said Mario Hardy, a vice president at research firm UBM Aviation. "Imagine if an AirAsia or a Spring was able tomorrow to lower that price by half. How many more people would be travelling?"

Hardy and other experts and industry insiders believe that Chinese authorities will allow the aviation market to open up gradually so that there's enough time to build up the required infrastructure. China is building 82 new airports and renovating 101 others in a five-year plan that runs until 2015.

"Otherwise it will be a mess," Hardy said. "It would be chaos."

Until then, travelers like Ren, the businesswoman and travel blogger, will have to put up with higher prices. Ren is thinking of going to India on her next trip but is disappointed with the limited options. She could fly with Air China at a cost of 4,000-5,000 yuan ($$635-$790) round trip. Or she could pay 2,000 yuan ($320) on AirAsia ? but she would need to change planes at AirAsia's home base in Malaysia.

"It's annoying," said Ren. But "life is not perfect and I have no choice. I could not ask for the flight to be both cheap and offer the perfect route."

Important Tips With Regards To Commercial Real Estate | Eric Chua ...

There are a number of motivations that can drive you toward commercial real estate investment. At the same time, the choice to make this sort of investment must be your own, based on your own knowledge base. The more educated you are, the more earning potential you have. The hints and tips in the following article can get you started on learning the fundamentals of the commercial real estate market, or enhance the knowledge you already possess.

When dealing with commercial real estate, it is important to retain the services of a lawyer with a high level of expertise. You should have your lawyer review everything related to the properties you are involved in. If a complication arises relating to your real estate transaction, you should be represented by the best person in order to set everything straight.

Make sure that you know and understand what ?NOI? (Net Operating Income) is. In order to be successful and stay profitable, watch this number closely, and take steps to make certain it does not fall into the negatives.

TIP! Before negotiating a lease with a commercial tenant, work on narrowing down the list of things that would constitute default. This will lessen the possibility of a lease default by your tenant.

List your real estate at a realistic price. There are a lot of uncertainties which can have a huge impact on the price of your lot.

See to it that you?re dealing with companies that care about their customers before you engage them in a commercial purchase. If you don?t, you might wind up suffering over the long haul for an otherwise preventable error.

It?s a good idea to purchase properties larger than you actually need when buying commercial real estate. It?s not more work managing more units than less units, but each unit can cost less if you buy a property with more.

TIP! Make sure you never underestimate anyone when it comes to real estate, not your private lenders or your investors, know what everyone is capable of. Make sure you have a big network because there?s a lot of property that goes unnoticed and is sold, you want to increase your chances of making deals by always being informed.

Be mindful of the environment that your possible property is situated in. Since the responsibility lies at your feet, if there is any environmental waste that needs to be cleaned up, you will be the one who has to do it. Do you want to buy property in a area that is prone to flooding? reconsider your options before making a final decision. Talk to an environmental assessment agency to learn more about the area where the property is located.

People who invest in commercial real estate know the threat associated with fluctuating interest rates. Current conditions, with their unpredictable rises and falls, leave investors room to make a great profit or to suffer an incredible loss. Evaluate all long-term options, and take the interest rate hikes into consideration.

If your real estate deal includes inspections (and it always should), make sure to ask to see the credentials of all of the inspectors. This is true when working with pest or insect removal, since many people who are non-accredited work in these fields. Doing so, will help you avoid much larger problems after actually making the purchase.

TIP! Conduct tours of potential properties. Even better, have someone who knows commercial real estate tour the properties with you.

Before working within the market, you should first locate and secure adequate financing. Loan products and commercial lenders are very different than a home loan. A commercial loan may actually offer better terms. Because commercial property is usually more expensive than other property, the loan is going to be larger. This means the down payment you have to come up with needs to be larger. So it helps tremendously if you can locate the financing first in order to put together a down payment.

Don?t overwhelm yourself trying to work on several types of investments at once. Put all of your attention on one investment until it?s complete. Keep your focus on one certain type of property, whether it?s land, retail, apartments or offices. Each type of investment requires individual attention. You are better off becoming a master of one arena than mediocre with many.

Think about long-term economic conditions before investing in real estate. Be prepared for large-scale inflation during the next couple of years. Just a few years ago, most contracts protected you from inflation by locking you in at a certain interest rate. This practice is nearly extinct today, which can leave you susceptible to losses that are caused by inflation.

TIP! Find a trustworthy real estate firm by asking about how they make their profit. Legitimate brokers won?t mind answering this type of question openly and honestly.

If you want to rent your commercial property, well built solid buildings are your best bet. Tenants are more likely to move in when they know the property is well taken care of. Tenants will also have to deal with maintenance issues less often, which means they have more time go about their business.

There are a ton of good reasons to use commercial real estate as an investment, but you need to know a bit about it before you begin. Take the tips you learned here and apply them to your own commercial real estate endeavors. They will help you reach your goal of maximum

TIP! If you?re signing a lease for commercial real estate, then hesitance pays off when asked to put your signature on any standard leasing form. Large companies might insert extra requirements in the form, and they are often exceptionally lengthy.

Morsi: Won't rest until Syrian war ends

(AP) ? Egypt's new President Mohammed Morsi, making his debut on the global stage at the United Nations, said Wednesday that he will not rest until the civil war in Syria is brought to an end.

He called the fighting there, which opposition groups say has killed at least 30,000 people, the "tragedy of the age" and one that "we all must end." And he invited all nations to join an effort to stop the bloodshed that began about 18 months ago when opposition figures rose up against President Bashar Assad's regime.

Morsi, an Islamist and key figure in the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood, opened his remarks to the U.N. General Assembly by celebrating himself as Egypt's first democratically elected leader who was swept into office after what he called a "great, peaceful revolution."

He said the first issue for the world body should be certifying the rights of the Palestinian people.

"The fruits of dignity and freedom must not remain far from the Palestinian people," he said, adding that it was "shameful" that U.N. resolutions are not enforced. He decried Israel's continued building of settlements on territory that the Palestinians claim for a future state in the West Bank.

On another subject, Morsi condemned as an obscenity the video produced in the United States that denigrated Islam's Prophet Muhammad. He insisted that freedom of expression does not allow for attacks on any religion.

Morsi also condemned the violence that swept Muslim countries last week in reaction to the video. At least 51 people were killed, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans targeted in an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

He appeared to have been responding to President Barack Obama's General Assembly speech Tuesday in which the U.S. leader again condemned the video but sternly defended the U.S. Constitution's guarantees of free speech.

Morsi did not explain what limitations he felt should be placed on free speech but said the video and the violent reaction to it demanded "reflection." He said freedom of expression must be linked with responsibility, "especially when it comes with serious implications for international peace and stability."

Earlier Wednesday, Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, known for past fiery denunciations of the United States and Israel, spoke at length about his vision for a new world order without the "hegemony of arrogance." And of Israel, he cited what he termed the "continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation."

He did not refer to Iran's nuclear program. Israel and Western nations contend that Tehran is using what it insists is a peaceful nuclear program as a cover for developing the ability to build atomic weapons. Iran is suffering under tough sanctions as punishment for Iran's failure to cooperate with the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency to prove the peaceful nature of its drive to enrich uranium to levels that could be used to build a nuclear weapon.

Israel has threatened a military strike against Iranian nuclear installations, but Obama insists that time remains to solve the dispute through diplomacy. Obama has vowed, however, to stop Tehran from obtaining a nuclear arsenal.

The U.S. delegation boycotted Ahmadinejad's speech in response to the "paranoid theories and repulsive slurs against Israel" included in a separate address delivered by the Iranian president on Monday.

"It's particularly unfortunate that Mr. Ahmadinejad will have the platform of the U.N. General Assembly on Yom Kippur, which is why the United States has decided not to attend," Erin Pelton, spokeswoman for the U.S. Mission to the U.N. said in a statement.

Another Arab leader making his first appearance at the U.N. General Assembly's annual ministerial meeting after being swept into power by the Arab Spring revolutions was Yemen's President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. He took office in February after more than a year of political turmoil and is now trying to steer his country's democratic transition.

Hadi called on the U.N. to grant membership to Palestine and support a transfer of power in Syria.

"The only option for our brothers in Syria is to agree on an initiative ... for peaceful change and transfer of power through ballot boxes," he said.

Also Wednesday, members of the U.N. Security Council are scheduled to discuss change in the Arab world. With no sign of an end to the Security Council's paralysis over intervening to end the raging Syrian civil war, Germany's U.N. Ambassador Peter Wittig said his country chose to focus the council's ministerial session on something new and positive in the Mideast ? "the emergence of the Arab League as a regional actor that has proved to be essential for conflict resolution."

The 21-member Arab League has shaken off decades of near total submission to the will of the region's leaders and is seeking to transform itself after the seismic changes brought about by the Arab revolutions. The league has supported the rebels who ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and suspended Syria in response to Assad's brutal crackdown against his opponents.

"This organization is promoting the values that the United Nations is standing for ? human rights, rule of law, democracy, pluralism," the fight against corruption and promoting economic opportunity, Wittig said.

As rebels claimed credit Wednesday for a strike on Syria's army command headquarters in Damascus, Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby said that advances by the opposition could lead to a break in the impasse.

"Either there will be a political solution, and here the government is not going to budge, or there will be a change in the situation there," he said. "The more the opposition gains ground, the more this will be easier."

Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki, who was swept to power after protests in his country kicked off the Arab Spring, told reporters that the Arab League must act immediately to protect the lives of Syrians.

"The Syrian people haven't been backed as they deserve, and it's now our responsibility as Arabs to back these people against a bloody dictator who's obviously decided to burn the whole country to stay in power," he said.

Alumni promote foster care for adoption and ministry | The Moody ...

by Morgan Sutter correspondent

David and Larissa Green have experienced everything from international missions to stateside local church ministry since they graduated from Moody in 2005 with degrees in world missions and evangelism (for David) and Bible (for Larissa). In the midst of it all, God laid adoption on their hearts, and their hope is to be an encouragement to the Christian community in considering foster care.

After graduation, the Greens served as English teachers in East Asia with SEND International for one year, then moved to Plevna, Kansas, where David serves as a pastor for Plevna Community Bible Church.

In 2007, Larissa suffered from a life-threatening infection and underwent major surgery which made it unlikely that she and David would ever have biological children. Instead of giving up plans for a family, David and Larissa decided to foster children. ?We became foster parents with the hope of adopting, but it was a huge step of faith,? they said. In foster care, adoption is never a guaranteed outcome, and the Greens? faith was tested but did not waver even after they were forced to send two children back to their birth mother.

In late 2010, David and Larissa received two more foster children. Daniel Edward (Danny) was 2 ? and Emily Helena (Emmy) was just three days old. The children came into their home at the same time and were both born in a nearby town, but were not biological siblings. ?We did not expect to keep Danny ? when he became available to adopt it was a big surprise,? Larissa said.

Plans were also made for Emmy?s adoption, but they were interrupted briefly when it was thought that Emmy would return to her biological father. ?This was a dark and very scary time for us,? the Greens explained, ?but we thank the Lord that the truth about her birth dad?s behavior became known, and she also became available.?

The state terminated the rights of both Danny?s and Emmy?s birthparents in late 2011. Both adoptions were finalized on April 23, 2012. Because Emmy and Danny were adopted through foster care, the Greens did not have to pay for their adoption. Instead, they actually received financial support.

?If anyone is interested in adopting, please consider foster care! It has a ?bad rap,? but it is truly one of the best ways to care for children who desperately need love,? Larissa said. ?It is also very likely that you will be able to adopt a child someday without incurring debt.?

The Greens, still licensed to do foster care, just received an eight-month-old girl named Mari. She will be with them for an undetermined amount of time. David continues to serve as a pastor at PCBC while Larissa stays at home with their kids. She is currently home schooling Danny and remains active in the women?s and children?s ministries at church. Larissa also writes about foster care and adoption on her blog, http://houseofgreen.wordpress.com/. For now, they say they are learning all they can about parenting God?s way, while remaining active in ministry to their community.

Poll deals climate change blow for Mitt Romney

More bad news for Mitt Romney: the Republican party's scepticism about climate change seems likely to play badly with voters who haven't yet decided who to back in November's US presidential election.

A new poll, run by Yale University and George Mason University in Virginia, has found that, when it comes to their views on climate change, "undecideds" look remarkably similar to supporters of Barack Obama.

Of the 1061 people polled, about three-quarters are judged likely to vote, based on their registration, stated intentions and past turnout. Among them, just 27 per cent of Romney backers believed global warming was human-caused, compared to 65 per cent of the Obama supporters.

Of the 87 undecideds who were likely voters in the sample, 65 per cent believed global warming was human-caused, and 61 per cent said the issue would help guide their vote.

Because the sample contained just 87 undecideds who were likely to vote, there is a large margin of error surrounding these numbers. Still, the difference between undecideds and Romney supporters was statistically significant.

"We'd have expected them to be somewhere in the middle," says Anthony Leiserowitz, who heads the Yale Project on Climate Change Communication. "But we find they're very similar to likely Obama voters."

Consistent results

The results are broadly consistent with a study released in December 2011, in which a team led by Jon Krosnick of Stanford University in California presented statements by hypothetical political candidates, and asked people whether these candidates would win their support.

This suggested that Republicans, in particular, are likely to gain votes by taking "green" positions, and lose votes by expressing scepticism about climate change.

So why has the Republican party largely embraced climate scepticism? Krosnick speculates that it is due to the influence of wealthy donors who oppose action to limit climate change. Still, he doubts whether the votes gained through spending on campaign ads will counter those lost by taking a sceptical position.

While Romney has acknowledged that human activities are contributing to climate change, he cites "a lack of scientific consensus" on the issue, and in accepting the Republican nomination mocked Obama's efforts to "begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet".

Leiserowitz doesn't expect climate change to be a key issue in the election, but with the polls slipping away from Romney, the Republican candidate will need every vote he can get.

Gautam Gambhir is a genuine match-winner, says MS Dhoni ? Cricket News Update

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the Indian captain, is extremely happy to see Gautam Gambhir finding his lost form during the ICC World T20 2012 and believes that the left-handed opener is a genuine match-winner.

After a superb One Day International (ODI) series in Sri Lanka, scoring a hundred and a couple of half-centuries, the cricketer from Delhi struggled to deliver the goods during the Test series against New Zealand at home, which resulted in a lot of criticism.

However, the stylish opener answered his critics in style by smashing a 38-ball 45 against England on Sunday, which included five boundaries. The left-hander helped India post a very competitive total of 170 runs on the board for the loss of four wickets, which turned out to be more than enough for the Poms, who were dismissed for just 80.

Gambhir finding his form before the Super 8 stage is crucial in Dhoni?s opinion, who believes that the opener possesses the ability to make a serious impact on a match.

"I am very happy for Gautam as he had planned his innings beautifully. He is someone who has had to struggle a lot to play for India. He is quite an aggressive character. He is a match-winner for us," the Indian captain expressed.

Rohit Sharma is another batsman who has not enjoyed a successful year in international cricket but is ranked as one of the world?s most naturally gifted players. Despite being criticized by many former cricketers, the skipper persisted with Sharma and promoted him up the batting order on Sunday.

The right-hander did not disappoint, scoring a fantastic 55 off just 33 balls, in which he struck five fours and a massive six over the cover boundary.

Dhoni expressed that Rohit was asked to bat at number four because the situation demanded some quick runs.

"We got a good start and the platform was ideal to send Rohit up the order. If the situation demands and we have a 70-75 runs added in the first 10 overs, you might see him again going up the order," he stated.

India have successfully qualified for the Super 8 stage, where they are likely to face Australia, South Africa and Pakistan.?
