Run the words 'Am I too old for video games?' in Google and you'll see a whole list of forlorn-sounding people pleading for answers on Yahoo! Answers, each hungrier for validation than the last. Six years ago, one chap said, "I want to buy myself a PSP or Nintendo DS but I'm afraid I'm too old to be playing video games because I'm twenty-five." Last month, a financially stable twenty-two year old confessed that he had told himself he would probably just stop liking them by twenty.
For many, video games are still a source of guilt, a masturbatory affliction that needs overcoming regardless of the fact that video games are now a multi-billion dollar industry that has been declared worthy of the rights accorded by the First Amendment. We've definitely come a long way but you still don't talk about video games if you want to get laid.
A Time to Level Up
CNN Contributor William J Bennett is a prime example of someone who sees video games as a part of the problem with our generation. The author of 'The Book of Man: Readings on the Path of Manhood', Bennett was the U.S Secretary of Education from 1985 to 1988 and the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy Under President George H.W Bush.
In an article entitled 'Why Men Are In Trouble?', Bennett observed that 'while women are graduating college and finding good jobs, too many men are not going to work, not getting married and not raising families.'.
?We may need to say to a number of our twenty-something men, "Get off the video games five hours a day, get yourself together, get a challenging job and get married." It's time for men to man up. ?
But what about women that play games? Should they be held to the same standards? After all, a lot of us play games. I have proof. Better yet, I have statistics. Last year, The Entertainment Software Association reported that 42% of gamers out there are female, 29% of gamers are over the age of 50 and that there are more adult women playing games than there are adolescent male gamers. We're everywhere, Mr. Bennett and we're made of all sorts: precocious iPhone kids, middle-aged women obsessed with the latest Zynga clone, Wii fans, fetching young professional gamers. The list goes on. Sure, we're graduating from college and finding good jobs, but we're also playing a hell of a lot of video games as well.
And these days, women are also busy making them too. Amy Hennig headed the 150-person team responsible for the Uncharted franchise. Christine Love challenged the world with games like Digital: a Love Story and Analogue: A Hate Story. Kellee Santiago is the president of thatgamecompany and the producer of Journey. Kim Swift made Portal a reality. If women are truly becoming emancipated and are out there proving themselves better than their male counterparts and are growing progressively more immersed in the culture of video games, does this mean men are falling behind because they're not playing enough of them?
More importantly, does it mean that video games are not the problem?
My Gaming Generation
An anonymous source from the world of competitive Starcraft II laughed derisively when I asked if there was ever a time to put the video games away with the Legos. ?I'm not ever going to stop playing games. I might stop playing them the way I do now, where they not only consume a very large part of my time but also a very large part of my thoughts. But I'm not going to stop.?

?I wouldn't say that abandoning your method of leisure can be classified as 'growing up'. It's analogous to 'growing up' by stopping fishing, or playin' basketball. Same thing, really.?
A Time For Action and Understanding

Mass media is rife with negative portrayals of video games. Often depicted as unfortunates incapable of maintaining social lives, the term 'gamer' has become synonymous with the word 'loser'. Gamers inhabit their parents' basements. Gamers have no jobs. Gamers are physically unattractive and oblivious to the concept of personal hygiene. Gamers are terrorists.
It's no wonder the concept of gamer is difficult to understand, considering that it is still evolving. There are no precedents. Two generations ago, video games were a little more than a twinkle in someone's eye; blocky pixels powered by computers the size of a room. Our society has only just begun to grow accustomed to the presence of video games. We're still learning. We're still familiarizing ourselves with the idea that video games are a legitimate form of entertainment, that it isn't a passing fad steeped in problems. It doesn't help that human beings are such visual beings. What you see is what you get. And what is to be expected when we are constantly accosted by images of people dying from extended gaming sessions? What are our grandparents to believe when political figures declare war against violent video games?
Is it time to grow up and stop playing?
No.
But it is time that we look beyond the stuff we see in the news and see gaming for what it is. Across the world, schoolteachers and soccer moms nurture virtual crops and play competitive Bejeweled. Corporate executives dabble with iPhone titles to pass the time. Children and working adults alike collect Nintendo DS street passes. Teenagers make a career out of their passions. However, these people are still largely invisible. Not everyone watches eSports on TV. Not everyone has learned to associate the idea of video games with the concept of healthy, functional adults.
But the voices of those who do understand are getting louder.

Going Green May Help Sell Your Home ? Rochester Real Estate ...

- Purchase the highest efficiency HVAC system you can afford and make sure it is correctly sized for the area you want to condition.
?But going green can seem like a huge challenge. There are so many products and things to consider. And if you?re selling your home you may wonder if going green is going to give you more or less green in your bank account. NAHBR says that ?72 percent of consumers report energy-efficient features in a home would influence their purchase decision.? The council also adds that ?61 percent of consumers would spend more than $5,000 upfront to save on utility costs.? And, consider this, there are approximately 125 million single-family homes in the U.S. but most were built before energy-efficiency developments, which means if your home has newly renovated green remodeling, it can be a buyer?s dream. Featuring your green renovations when you list your home for sale could give you that added value and unique market advantage.
?How to get started. Deciding to make your home green doesn?t have to be overwhelming nor do you have to make the entire house eco-friendly. Try things like installing energy-efficient lighting such as compact fluorescents. Also, change out any old appliances that are using up lots of energy.
?Once you?ve done this, compare your utility bills so that you can show the reduction to your real estate agent. Your agent can then point out the energy-savings to potential buyers. With utility bills on the rise, any savings can be a major influence on buyers. If they see that similar homes cost more to operate than yours, you will at the very least grab their attention.
?Get rid of energy-hog appliances. Sometimes homeowners don?t want to replace an appliance because they are selling their home, but replacing an energy-hog appliance can be a cost-effective way to increase the value of your home. Energy Star-certified appliances use less energy and are more efficient to operate. Many of these appliances are 10 percent to 50 percent more efficient than standard models.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Simon Cowell is playing it coy about rumors that Fergie, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson are being considered for "The X Factor."
Two judges' spots on the Fox TV singing contest opened up when Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger left after the first season. Cowell told a teleconference Wednesday that two women will replace them, but he declined to comment on who's being considered.
"There's been a load of speculation, some true, some not true," Cowell said. He added that he waited to see who was interested enough to ask about joining the show before focusing on the search.
Judge Antonio "L.A." Reid confirmed there had been discussions about adding Whitney Houston but no contact was made with her. Houston died Feb. 11.
Meetings will be held over the next few weeks with "a number of people," Cowell said, primarily to make it clear to contenders how much of a time commitment "X Factor" represents.
He didn't shed much light on the departures of Abdul and Scherzinger, saying only that shows evolve and "this time it was decided to do it sooner or later." He said the two have been "incredibly gracious and respectful" and he's looking forward to working with them again.
With host Steve Jones' exit, Cowell said he wants to switch to a two-host format that would better suit the show and the amount of information that needs to be explained, entertainingly, to viewers. He didn't say who might be hired but said they could be people who don't have "host" on their resume.
He's not looking far for new judges and emcees, Cowell indicated, saying, "it's important we have more Americans on the show."
Cowell, who's a judge on the Fox show he based on his hit British series, is English. Jones is Welsh.
He was guarded about guessing the ratings for "X Factor" when it returns this fall for its second season. After Cowell predicted it would be a hit in its freshman outing with 20 million viewers, the show averaged around 12 million weekly viewers, which is respectable but not a blockbuster.
"I should have kept my mouth shut," Cowell said. It took time for "American Idol," the home he and Abdul once shared, and NBC's "The Voice" to grow in the ratings, he said, expressing confidence the same will happen for "X Factor."
"I absolutely expect the second season to do better than the first season," he said. "We're not doing this to be second or third. ... We've learned how to make the show better."
Asked when the first release from season-one winner Melanie Amaro would be out, Cowell said the project wasn't being rushed, to do justice to her talent.

Silver has compiled an ?oral history? of Tim Tebow.? Since I?m finally forcing myself to trudge through the clumsy, narrative-challenged oral history of ESPN, I was prepared to ping-pong from quote to quote in the hopes of trying to find something instructive and/or entertaining from the broader item.
The new quotes loosely track Tebow?s first almost-full season as a starter.? Here are the ones that stuck out.? For those of you who received your ?I read the 750 pages of the ESPN book and all I got was this lousy T-shirt? T-shirts, it?ll be a snap (relatively speaking) to breeze through the whole thing.
Vikings defensive end Jared Allen has the most insightful comment of anyone.? (Yes, that?s the first time that specific sentence has ever been uttered in all of human history.)? ?You know what the coolest part about the whole thing is?? You know, coaches always think they have the winning theory: ?Our way is the right way!? Blah blah blah!?? Sometimes people think the game is more difficult than it is.? If you find something that works, go with it.? And I don?t really think it has to be a nine-syllable frickin? play.?

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The owner of a helicopter flight school whose student was involved in a mid-air collision said Monday the pilot narrowly escaped what could have been a deadly crash after the chopper was hit from behind by a small plane.
Instead, the pilots of both the Robinson R22 helicopter and Beechcraft Bonanza plane escaped with minor injuries after making rough emergency landings Sunday evening just north of Antioch, about halfway between Oakland and Sacramento.
The chopper pilot, a 29-year-old woman, is an experienced commercial airplane pilot who was logging night-flying hours alone toward a helicopter license, said Wayne Prodger, owner of Vertical CFI Helicopters in Hayward.
The woman told Prodger she briefly saw the plane behind her around 7 p.m. The next thing she knew, it struck the chopper's skids and she was falling to the ground, Prodger told The Associated Press in a phone interview.
"A few feet higher, it would've been catastrophic because the plane would've crashed right into the copter," he said.
Prodger declined to provide his student's name, saying she's still shaken up from the incident.
There are about 12 mid-air collisions each year in the United States, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
While infrequent, the mishaps are often deadly, said Peter Leffe, a Los Angeles-based aviation accident investigator.
"Both pilots are exceedingly lucky to be alive," he said of the weekend collision. "They can count their blessings."
Leffe, who has been flying for more than 46 years, said landings and departures have the greatest potential for accidents.
"It doesn't mean you don't have to be vigilant at all times," said Leffe, a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators. "You're constantly scanning the skies for other aircraft."
The helicopter set down just off state Highway 160, while the single-engine plane made a rough landing in a field just short of a nearby airport, authorities said.
Prodger said the woman's flight experience helped keep damage and injury to a minimum.
"The copter flipped over and she got herself out and turned the fuel off. In the face of all adversity, she was calm and cool enough to turn the switches off," Prodger said.
"From all accounts, she did everything perfectly to get the copter down," he added.
Two people were aboard the plane, said Ian Gregor, an FAA spokesman. The passenger was not injured.
Both pilots were taken to hospitals with minor injuries, Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Ramos said. The woman had cuts to her hands from barbed wire she encountered while climbing out of the chopper, according to Prodger.
The 1961 six-seat Beechcraft plane is registered to Ronald A. Gawer of Brentwood in Contra Costa County, records show.
Gawer did not immediately return a call for comment Monday.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.

WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) ? The maternal grandfather of a toddler who went missing two months ago is challenging the child's father to explain what happened on the night she was last seen in his home.
Ron Reynolds said Thursday his family is being torn apart because the father, Justin DiPietro, and others in the Waterville home won't explain what happened before Ayla Reynolds was reported missing on Dec. 17.
"That eats me up every day," an emotional Reynolds said from Portland, where he lives. "Why didn't they protect her? Why didn't he protect her? He was responsible for her safety and welfare."
Ayla's mother, Trista Reynolds, doesn't live with DiPietro. Ayla ended up with her father in October after child welfare workers intervened while her mother, who also lives in Portland, 75 miles southwest of Waterville, checked herself into a 10-day rehabilitation program.
DiPietro told police he last saw Ayla on the night of Dec. 16, when he put her to bed. At the time, Ayla, then 20 months old, was wearing green pajamas with polka dots and the words "Daddy's Princess" on them, and had a soft cast on her broken left arm.
Police say DiPietro, his girlfriend and his sister were in the home that night but aren't telling everything they know. DiPietro's mother, who owns the house, wasn't there that night, police said.
DiPietro couldn't be reached for comment Thursday, and his mother didn't return a message.
But a few days before Christmas, DiPietro, addressing the public for the first time, said in a statement he had "no idea what happened to Ayla or who is responsible." He said his family and friends would do "everything we can to assist in this investigation and get Ayla back home." He declared in another statement days later: "I would never do anything to hurt my child."
Ayla's disappearance garnered national attention as scores of law enforcement officers and volunteers searched for her in the week before Christmas. Law enforcement officials went so far as to drain nearby streams, and dive teams have searched the icy Kennebec River, about a mile from DiPietro's home.
Police eventually declared that Ayla's disappearance was a crime, and late last month they confirmed that Ayla's blood was found in the home's basement, which DiPietro used as his bedroom.
On Thursday, State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said investigators continue to work around the clock on the case. He said the number of tips from the public has exceeded 900.
"We continue with as much energy and determination as when we began two months ago," McCausland said. "At this point we would have liked to have had more answers, but that has not stopped the resolve to get those answers."
Ron Reynolds, a hospital security officer and former Marine, said he was thankful to police for their efforts. And he said he's trying hard to keep the faith that his granddaughter will be found alive.
"I just hope she's OK," he said.
Attorney Steve Bourget, hired by DiPietro's family members to speak for them, says there were no drugs or alcohol in the house the night Ayla disappeared. He says the family members continue to cooperate with police.
But McCausland suggested Thursday that the DiPietros could be doing more to help investigators. He said detectives are encouraging the DiPietro family to keep Ayla's name in the public, something the Reynolds family has been doing through a Web site, billboards and interviews with the news media.
