Pundit Audit 2012

David Weigel.

David Weigel looks at a year of close calls

Every December, when the news cycles have spun themselves out, I actively try to humiliate myself. I page back through the articles and blog posts I wrote (196 pages of them this time) and record my worst blown predictions and lazy punditry. Never have I had to do this in a presidential election year, when the gut-checks and guesstimates grow like sweet corn in the field.

The year started out harmless. On Jan. 2, I filed a story about Rick Santorum?s likely win in the nonbinding precinct caucuses and wrote that he would likely win them, then lose ?New Hampshire, or Nevada, or South Carolina, [and] the nomination.? That was conventional wisdom, sure, but I stuck to it and predicted a Romney primary win even before Santorum, Newt Gingrich, and then Santorum again took turns humbling him. On Jan. 3, I noticed that turnout of Republicans in those caucuses was actually down from 2008, and argued that ?Republicans aren't so excited about 2012.? And they weren?t. Not as much as the high-paid pollsters for the Romney campaign thought. (I hope they?re spending those bonuses wisely.)

I?m disinclined to believe whatever most people currently believe. That helps out in an election year. Every bend in this year?s primary season or general election inaugurated a media panic?Gingrich can be the nominee! Romney will close the gender gap! The first presidential debate changed everything! I didn?t fall for too much of this, and frequently enough I saw nontrends and nonstories through They Live glasses. Here?s what I did fall for.

Jan. 13: Romney can lock this up in South Carolina. Reagan. Bush. Dole. Bush. McCain. These men won the Palmetto primary then easily won the Republican Party?s nomination. Before the polls captured Newt Gingrich?s rise, I assumed that Mitt Romney would stagger to some kind of unimpressive Southern win, comparable to McCain?s. After Gingrich bet everything on an attack against Romney?s business experience, we lacked proof, I thought, that ?actual Republican voters are blanching at this more than they?d blanch at Bain Capital?s investment moves.? Well, they blanched. They blanched all the way to the polls, where they gave Gingrich a landslide victory that presaged Romney?s wan popularity with the GOP base. Months later, when Gingrich quit the race, he took a moment to apologize to South Carolina voters, as ?we will have broken their tradition of always picking the nominee.?

Feb. 2: Maybe Ron Paul will surprise us! Much of my reporting life has been spent on the Ron Paul beat. I?ve seen him and his movement underrated many times?I remember how eyes rolled when Rand Paul decided to run for the Senate. This year, I slightly overrated Paul?s ability to win popular votes, and refused to believe polls that had him running third in Nevada. ?Paul has an advantage that won't show up in polls.? He didn?t, and never met the media?s metric for popular support. But his movement managed to control the delegations of five states, and provided all manner of drama through the convention.

Feb. 8: The Republican primary will drag on for months, because it?s in all the fringe candidates? interest to make it drag. Not quite enough, not really. See also my optimistic take on Santorum?s blather about dragging this thing out with proportional delegate selection.

March 7: Gingrich can come back, again. Having underrated the loveable former speaker once before, I endeavored never to make the same mistake. I was impressed by his vote totals in counties in the Deep South, especially in his adopted home of Georgia, and surmised that ?Gingrich is in a good position to win Alabama and Mississippi next week, further muddling the ?Santorum, conservative champion!? story.?

April 12: The ?war on women? is over. If I were composing this article in the proper holiday manner, as a list or slideshow, this would be No. 1. The Obama campaign responded to the GOP?s inevitable anti-abortion and anti-birth control politics by labeling it part of a ?war on women.? The Romney campaign, staffed by generally moderate-minded Republicans (Stu Stevens, Eric Fehrnstrom), did not know how to respond. Not until Hilary Rosen, who wasn?t even affiliated with the Obama campaign, went on a low-rated CNN show and said Ann Romney ?hadn?t worked a day in her life.? The Romney campaign blew this up into a news-cycle-chewing ?outrage,? and I sort of fell for it. The lesson: Voters pay attention to policy, even when the pundits don?t.

July 19: Obama?s policy giveaways weren?t helping him with nonwhites. Luckily, I didn?t invest too much in this storyline, but the occasional summer poll suggested that the White House was losing support to Romney despite the president?s aggressive moves to satisfy Hispanic voters and gay donors. Future lesson: Pay less attention to polls! (I need the rest of the Internet to take the lead on this.)

Sept. 26: Republicans will elect a black, female, Mormon congresswoman. The myth of Mia Love had always looked outsized and untested. A daughter of Haitian immigrants, with a fantastic story, Love hit that candidate sweet spot where reporters preferred to profile her potential history-making power than to investigate her actual views. I was thrown by polls that gave Love a huge lead, spotted her some points because she was running on Mitt Romney?s ticket, and scoffed at the ads her Democratic incumbent opponent was running. ?In an age of stronger partisan loyalty,? I wrote, ?it's increasingly hard for the ?I hate my party, really!? message to overcome the ?there's an R behind my name? message.? Hard, but not impossible. Love lost.

Oct. 2: Todd Akin could pull this off. Before the presidential debates I flew to Missouri to find out what the state was going to do with its instantly famous gaffe-o-matic Republican candidate for U.S. Senate. ?Akin?s team,? I found, ?sees a clear separation between the national media?s focus and the worries of Missouri.? They would, wouldn?t they? Even the polls found the race deadlocked, with Claire McCaskill running only a few points behind Barack Obama, who was sure to lose the state. But the polls (except for Survey USA?take a bow, guys!) were wrong.

Nov. 5: It?ll be close, and Romney has a shot. When New York magazine asked me who would win, I chose Romney, narrowly, with 276 electoral votes?all of the Bush 2000 states minus New Hampshire and Nevada, plus one electoral vote from Maine.

If we leave out Twitter, that Octopus?s Garden of overconfidence and B.S., then this is really all I got wrong in 2012. A few times, I was even bailed out by reality?it seemed that the state would lose the Pennsylvania voter ID trials, and then the state won, and then a higher court reversed the decision. But I?m at peace with what I got wrong. In most cases, I could have saved myself if I?d done more reporting or gone to more hot zones. In a few cases, I fell too easily for spin and access.

There is much more to this business than prediction, which is why the pundit who did it best?Nate Silver?eschewed gut feelings and Advisers Speaking on the Condition of Anonymity for data. Next year, with its promise of constant fiscal showdowns, will require a combination of hard math and careful reporting. And I?ve already gone on record saying that Democrats might reform the filibuster, so we?ll see how I manage.

Insight: How U.S. retailers are building up their online muscle

MARTINSBURG, West Virginia (Reuters) - The brave new world for U.S. retailers can be found in small cities like Martinsburg, West Virginia.

That's where department store chain Macy's Inc recently opened a facility the size of 43 football fields - big enough to stock 1 million pairs of shoes - just to fulfill orders made online.

The $150 million building, its third one dedicated primarily to supporting macys.com, has already been handling 60,000 orders on a busy day this holiday season. Macy's expects that figure to triple in two years.

"The customer is increasingly voting that she wants to shop both ways," said RB Harrison, Macy's executive vice president in charge of integrating e-commerce and store operations.

From Macy's to Home Depot Inc and Best Buy Co Inc, retail executives are racing to speed up order delivery and improve inventory management, which if done well, can help profit margins.

Many chains are also hiring staff, or even buying firms in Silicon Valley, to get the edge in technology.

"Today, tomorrow and going forward, you are comparing the experience in our store to the experience of sitting in your living room, in the comfort of your home, ordering something on your laptop, your smart phone or your iPad," Home Depot Chief Executive Frank Blake told Reuters.

"Your willingness to put up with rude associates, dirty stores and out of stocks is just going to go down and down and down. Our bar on performance in our stores is going to go up and up and up," he said.

To be sure, online sales to date account for just 7 percent of retail sales, according to Forrester Research. But the firm expects online sales growth to rise 45 percent to $327 billion and account for 9 percent of overall sales by 2016.

Retailers are realizing they must respond to that kind of growth.

"When I was meeting with brick-and-mortar retailers 24 months ago they weren't thinking about online," said Carlo Bronzini Vender, a senior partner at New York-based investment bank Sonenshine Partners who helped advise Drugstore.com when it was bought by Walgreen Co in 2011. "Now people are being more proactive about it."

Even if some retailers like Macy's are less exposed to the threat from e-commerce's 800-pound gorilla Amazon.com Inc than a company like electronics chain Best Buy Inc, they are all under enormous pressure to offer faster delivery times, better service and an array of products.

Already armed with 40 e-commerce fulfillment facilities, Amazon is set to open another 7 centers next year.

And by next year, Amazon could offer cost-efficient same-day shipping to every customer in the 10 largest U.S. cities, according to RBC Capital Markets.

This year, Saks Inc, Dillard's Inc and Kohl's Corp are among retailers that opened the biggest online fulfillment centers they have ever had.

And those without much of an online presence are moving quickly to get one. For example, T.J. Maxx parent TJX Cos Inc, which sells designer clothing and home goods at discounted prices, said on Friday it bought off-price Internet retailer Sierra Trading Post for about $200 million.

NOT-SO-SECRET WEAPON

Most national retailers have largely stopped opening new stores as same-store sales growth has slowed compared to online.

But the stores can be a major weapon for companies like Macy's and Home Depot as they fight Amazon.

Since this summer, 292 of Macy's 800 stores have been doing double-duty as mini-fulfillment centers that assemble, pack and ship online orders, up from 23 stores a year ago. It plans to add this function to 200 more stores next year.

Nordstrom Inc has been doing this for years, giving it a big lead over other department stores.

At Macy's, already 10 percent of orders placed online have been dispatched through stores this holiday season.

"It's a natural extension for us because of our ability to leverage the 800 stores' inventory," said Harrison of Macy's. He noted that the cost for equipping a store for e-commerce is relatively small, requiring a small space in the docking area for tables, scales, and room to pack boxes.

Saks is testing "ship-from-store" and expects to roll it out next fall. Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Kohl's are also testing it.

"Fulfilling online orders from the store is the most important thing that will change physical retailers over the next five years," said Matt Nemer, an e-commerce analyst at Wells Fargo.

The strategy is aimed squarely at boosting profit margins.

Saks CEO Stephen Sadove envisions a scenario in which a pair of shoes sitting unsold at his Saks Fifth Avenue flagship could be used to fill an online order and sold at full price, instead of ending up being sold at a discount, hurting profit.

Macy's computers have complex algorithms that scour companywide inventory, factor in distance and shipping costs to come up with an optimal way to assemble and ship an order.

Despite higher shipping costs, Macy's shipments are often split between locations if a computer determines that the benefit to margins from selling an item that a store doesn't need or has too much of outweighs the extra expenses.

Stores are also serving as pick-up spots for online orders, and many retailers are finding this a boon. Wal-Mart says customers spend about $60 in a store when they pick up items ordered online.

In November, Best Buy decided to assign additional employees to deal with in-store pick-ups since 40 percent of bestbuy.com orders are now picked up.

DANGER OF MISSTEPS

Even Amazon sees the benefits of a physical presence. Staples Inc said last month it will install "Amazon Lockers" at its stores, allowing customers to have packages sent to Staples stores to avoid delivery hassles.

The biggest reason many retailers are only now offering 'ship-from store' and in-store pick-up is that the traditionally managed store and e-commerce inventory had been handled separately.

That is changing rapidly. Saks is spending about $40 million this year to update its computer systems in part to integrate databases. Industry experts say Nordstrom's e-commerce lead over department store rivals stems in large part to technology investments it made years ago.

But there are risks.

Computer systems and staff have to be ready or else retailers can face disaster, said Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru. The use of stores is pointless if, for example, an inventory system gives the stockroom person collecting an order incorrect information about where a coat is located, leading to wasted time.

There is also a big risk of an item in store being "shopworn," or unsuitable to be sold.

"It's smart to fulfill from stores if you can figure out a way to get your operations right," Mulpuru said, noting the potential for human error is another concern. Such problems are limited at fulfillment centers because the systems are highly automated.

Executives agree. Harrison said stores are not meant to replace fulfillment centers, with their much greater breadth and quantity of products, but are there to supplement them.

"It's always going to be more efficient to ship from a fulfillment center," Saks' Sadove told Reuters. "You're never going to be perfect in 'ship-from-store'."

SILICON VALLEY APPEAL

To support its e-commerce strategy, retailers are aggressively hiring in Silicon Valley. Nordstrom took on more than 400 new employees with software engineering and website development experience, including Kirk Beardsley, an e-commerce executive from Microsoft Corp who had been a director of business development at Amazon for over seven years.

Retailers hope to take this even further by analyzing online data. Macy's executive Harrison said data collected this holiday season will help prepare for the next steps in its online push.

Last year, Wal-Mart acquired California-based start-up Kosmix, which developed technology to filter data from social media networks. As a result, Wal-Mart's San Bruno, California-based e-commerce offices now house more than 1,000 staff.

Getting hold of the technology to back up these efforts is driving acquisitions. They are frequently small ones, driven by retailers' attempts to master the online sales process, rather than immediately boost sales.

Home Depot, which bought tech start-up Redbeacon earlier this year, is looking to acquire or partner with more companies in the Valley, according to CEO Blake.

Redbeacon, founded by a trio of Google Inc veterans, matches homeowners with the best contractors for jobs such as cleaning and home repair. That kind of innovation will send shock waves through the sector, Blake said.

"I think there is going to be as much change over the next 10 years in retail as in the last 50 years. So if you're prioritizing where you put your best people, your best resources and all the rest, for us it's on inter-connective retail," said Blake.

Nail That Home Improvement Project by Steering Clear of These ...

Color is one of the best instruments you can use to add character and definition to your house. And one of the best ways to achieve this is by painting your home with the right hue. That is why, a house paint job is crucial as it can make or break your house?s look. Sadly, many homeowners do not achieve great results as they succumb in house painting mistakes which often, if not always, lead to disastrous results. Make sure you don?t fall for the same mistakes by taking this guide to heart.

Wrong Choice of Color
Painting your home with the wrong color is one of the most disastrous things you can do in a house paint job. How could you possibly pick the wrong color? Well, one obvious answer to that is not buying small sample cans and doing tests before proceeding with the actual paint job . Looking at the color fan provided by the paint manufacturer and placing it against your wall is not enough to come up with your final paint color choice. Sample cans would not hurt that much in your budget and are actually great investments. By painting a small portion of your wall with a particular paint color, you would clearly see whether the tone looks good on your room or not.

How about those that say you should follow your heart and not be afraid to try bold colors? Proceeding with the color that you want and trying bold paint colors for your house are not issues as long as you check first, through the sample cans, whether the colors look as good as how you can imagine them.

Forgetting About the Prep Work

Prep work is what you call the labor-intensive, backbreaking job you do before you do the first stroke of paint brush onto your wall. It includes cleaning, scrubbing, washing, scraping of old paint, cutting in, disarranging room set-up, and more. Ignoring this phase will surely get you into house paint troubles. Skipping the prep work could result in poor quality and stressful paint job.

Too Excited for the Next Coat
It is basic in house painting jobs to let the first coat of paint to dry completely before applying the second coat on top of it. However, not all homeowners know or are mindful of this. Some would still force the second layer of paint on top of the first coat even if the latter is not yet dry. The result?an unsightly paint experiencing alligatoring. Alligatoring is a paint problem that is characterized by several patterned cracks, making it appear like the skin of an alligator. It is not a good reward for a tiring paint job, is it?

Lack of Knowledge
Before starting with the paint job, it is important to evaluate yourself first. The very question you should ask yourself is, ?Do I really know how to paint my house?? A house painting job can seem easy for some but in reality, the painter must know how to use appropriate tools and correctly use paint. There are different kinds of paint brushes and rollers. Each has its own special purpose. There are also other tools that you have to familiarize yourself with to know which to use on what purpose. And lastly, there are guidelines on how to choose, buy, mix, and preserve paint. There are several other dos and don?ts in home painting which you should learn about beforehand especially if you are planning to do the job yourself. Otherwise, you can always get help from the pros.

Huawei shows off 6.1-inch Android phablet ahead of CES [video]

On Sunday morning, Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the National Rifle Association, told the world that armed guards stopped school shootings in Israel. Israel begs to differ. "Israel had a whole lot of school shootings until they did one thing," LaPierre said sitting calmly on Meet the Press. "They said, 'We're going to stop it,' and they put armed security in every school, and they have not had a problem since then."

Firefighters ambushed by gunman while responding to house fire

A man with a criminal history shot and killed two West Webster, N.Y. firefighters and seriously injured two others as they responded to a fire at his home, police say.

William H. Spengler, Jr., 62, apparently started a 5:35 a.m. fire at his home on Lake Road? and then waited with an armament of weapons for first responders to arrive, Webster N.Y. Police Chief Gerald Pickering said at an afternoon news conference.

?He was shooting from high ground or a berm," Pickering said. "He was barricaded with weapons to shoot first responders."

After a brief exchange of gunfire with police, Spengler then shot and killed himself at the scene, Pickering said.

Spengler was convicted in 1981 in the death of his 92-year-old grandmother a year earlier. He served time in prison and was released in 1998, Pickering said.

Spengler beat Rose Spengler to death with a hammer 1980, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported. Rose Spengler had lived in the home next to William Spengler on Lake Road at the time of her death.

Local police had not noted any criminal activity in his recent past, Pickering said.

Pickering said they are looking into the apparent disappearance of Spengler's sister who is unaccounted for at this time.

Police and fire officials are continuing to gather evidence and will inspect the seven homes that were destroyed in the fire that spread to nearby houses in the small lakeside town located 10 miles east of Rochester.

The victims in the shooting are Mike Chiapperini, also a lieutenant and public information officer with the local police department, and Tomasz Kaczowka, Pickering said.

"These people get up in the middle of the night to fight fires. They don't expect to be shot and killed," a tearful Pickering said at the press conference.

Chiapperini was described by Pickering as a lifelong firefighter who started with the department's explorer program and had about 20 years of experience. Kaczowka was a younger firefighter who was on the force for about two years and was also a 911 dispatcher, he said.

West Webster firefighters Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino were seriously injured and are at Strong Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds, a hospital spokeswoman said.? Scardino? has? injuries to his chest and lungs. Hofsetter was injured in the pelvis, the spokeswoman said at a media briefing. Both are in guarded condition, she said.

An off-duty police officer from nearby Greece, N.Y., John Ritter was also injured by shrapnel during the shooting, Pickering said.

Pickering said that one of the firefighters who survived made his way across a bridge to safety. The other three did not make it across, Pickering said. Police arrived and rescued the other three firefighters, but two were fatally shot, Pickering said.

The morning scene was described as chaotic as police and firefighters dealt with an immense blaze as well as gunshots,? local news station WHAM-TV? reports.

?I?m not aware of anything like this happening in Webster, obviously not a firefighter being fired upon,? Webster Fire Marshal Rob Boutillier told the Democrat and Chronicle.? Pickering described Webster as resort lakeside community that is quiet and usually peaceful.

WHAM reported that an outpouring of support has come through the Webster community. Black flags reportedly have been draped at some homes and offices to honor those killed and injured.

N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo tweeted of the incident: We as the community of #NY mourn their loss as now 2 more families must spend the holidays without their loved ones #Webster

The Callous Theology of James Dobson

When I received this piece from Peter Wehner, I wanted to publish it right away ? and the fastest way to do so is as a guest post. ?For those who don?t know, Pete has been one of the leading evangelicals in Washington for a long time now. ?He served in the Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations, and headed George W. Bush?s in-house policy shop, the Office of Strategic Initiatives. He co-authored?City of Man: Religion and Politics in a New Era?with Michael Gerson, and?Wealth and Justice: The Morality of Democratic Capitalism?with Arthur C. Brooks. Presently he is a Senior Fellow at the?Ethics and Public Policy Center?and writes frequently for?Commentary.

Peter Wehner

The Callous Theology of James Dobson

By Peter Wehner

Some Christian conservatives seemingly cannot help themselves. ?They have to try to find some deep theological explanation for the evil we witness in places like Newtown, Connecticut. ?But often in doing so, they injure the very faith they seek to represent. ??The latest example is by Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, who, in speaking about the events at Sandy Hook Elementary School, said this:

I mean millions of people have decided that God doesn?t exist, or he?s irrelevant to me, and we have killed fifty-four million babies and the institution of marriage is right on the verge of a complete redefinition. ?Believe me, that is going to have consequences too.

And a lot of these things are happening around us, and somebody is going to get mad at me for saying what I am about to say right now, but I am going to give you my honest opinion: I think we have turned our back on the Scripture and on God Almighty and I think he has allowed judgment to fall upon us. ?I think that?s what?s going on.

Let?s see if we can untangle some of this, beginning with this observation: In the New Testament, suffering and death are more often evidence of obedience than disobedience to God. ?When the Lord told Ananias to go to Straight Street and place his hands on Saul (later Paul) to restore Saul?s sight, the Lord said to Ananias, ?This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. ?I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.? ?The two most important figures in Christianity ? Jesus and St. Paul ? died violent deaths (according to Christian tradition, Paul was beheaded by the Romans). ?So the effort to create a cause-and-effect ? in this case, turning your back on God leads to mass shootings and violent death ? is itself theologically misguided.

The workings of God in the midst of tragedy cannot be reduced to a simplistic moral mathematics in which sin yields to disaster, in part because America is not a covenant community on the model of ancient Israel. The community of faith is found in every nation. ?Believers share the blessings and tragedies of their neighbors. Rather than declaring the suffering of their neighbors to be deserved, they should work and pray for the common good.

A second point: Earlier this year we learned from the FBI that violent crime rates in the U.S. are reaching historic lows. ?Since 1993, for example, the rate of violent victimization has dropped by more than 70 percent. ?Those findings undercut the Dobson thesis. If America has gotten less godly, why would God?s judgment (which Dobson believes manifests itself in violent crimes) be getting less, not more, severe? ?On the flip side, the number, rate, and ratio of abortions in America are lower today than in the past. ?So why would God lash out now, when the abortion rate is going down, rather than before, when it was going up? ?And how would Dobson explain why the murder rate was higher when same-sex marriage wasn?t even being discussed and more people believed in God? ?One can see how terribly confused Dobson?s argument is once it?s actually scrutinized.

Third, Mr. Dobson assumes he knows the mind of God and what most grieves, angers and moves His heart. ?But surely Dobson knows that Jesus mentions divorce more often than he mentions homosexuality (which Paul addresses but Jesus does not). ?So why is same-sex marriage on Dobson?s list but divorce is left off? ?And what about the other things that concern God ? like indifference to the poor, not caring for the stranger and alien in our midst, a haughty spirit, and riches? ?When I listen to James Dobson and I read the gospel accounts, two jarringly different portraits emerge.

Now, assume you were a parent of one of the children who was gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School and you heard a well-known Christian figure like Dobson declare that the worst thing you could possibly conceive of ? the murder of your first-grade daughter ? was a result of the wrath of God. ?If you believed this, it would only add to your grief. ?And if you didn?t believe it, it would only add to your anger. ?And what would Dobson say to the father of the boy who had just dedicated his young life to the Lord? ?Why was he the target of God?s judgment? ?Because Washington State passed a same-sex marriage initiative?

Why is it that tragedies often bring out such callous statements ? including from the very people you would hope would show some measure of grace, discernment, and perspective? ?And why are some of the most offensive statements made by some of the nation?s most visible (conservative) Christians? ?I am at something of a loss to explain it.

Since in the past I?ve criticized other Christian leaders for making similar statements, I wanted to explain why I, an evangelical Christian and social conservative, find them to be disquieting.? It?s because they discredit a faith I cherish ? and what these people say is not the expression of the faith I hold. ?For them politics, not faith, is their interpretive lens. ?Christianity becomes a blunt instrument in an ideological struggle. ?The result is that people of faith explain a brutal massacre by connecting imaginary dots. ?And the fact that doing so damages the Christian faith seems to bother them not at all.

Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris couldn?t have done it any better.

You Can Now Buy Ads On Facebook Using - Business Insider

Getty Images / Justin Sullivan

Google CEO Larry Page and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg are going head to head.

?

Facebook just allowed search retargeting firm Chango into its ad exchange, which means that advertisers can now use Chango's trove of search data -- including info it's collected from Google users -- to target Facebook users with ads.

It's a significant move for Facebook. Previously, advertisers could target Facebook users with their own data collected from "cookies," the little pieces of software that web sites drop onto your browser as you surf the web. That data tells advertisers what you're interested in -- cars, volleyball, whatever -- but it often doesn't indicate what you're shopping for.

Search data, however, does. Anyone searching for "Prada shoes" is likely interested in buying some. This is called shopping "intent" data.

Until now, Facebook has had very little ability to serve ads based on intent. Mostly, its ads are based on demographic data from your profile. Who you are, not what you're buying, so to speak.

Chango has 300 million "search profiles" it's collected from the various publishers it has worked with. And yes, a lot of that data comes from Google searches. (As a technical matter, it's not actually data that Google has given to Chango, rather it's data from Google searches that Chango has collected itself by dropping cookies on users' browsers.)

Given that the Facebook Exchange (FBX) already boasts higher than average returns for advertisers using it, adding search data to the mix seems like a significant challenge to Google's dominance of the area. As AdExchanger's Zach Rodgers puts it:

The move is notable in that it represents an incursion by Facebook on the ?intent currency? of Google (Bing and Yahoo too), after a period of failed efforts by the search giant to capture Facebook?s social graph data to enhance its own core search functionality and advertising.

Today I was at the mall looking for headphones to my Sony Xperia J

I walked around the Apple company store "iSpot" I went there out of curiosity I wanted to see how much they cost Apple laptop I was shocked.
I have a asus laptop ( Intel core 2 duo 2,66 Ghz 1 GB RAM and NVIDIA chipset 512 MB) and and decent desktop computer( is quite old but when i bought it was real supercomputer Very Happy (Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66 Ghz 4 GB RAM i added 2 GB extra so now is 6 GB RAM 512MB NVIDIA GT (i get it in replacement for my Galaxy 9800 NVIDIA which was three month before my warranty expired Very Happy ))
I would like to mention that I am a Pole here in Poland do not earn as much as Americans, or even our Western neighbors Germany, because that we more respect every spent penny.

I thought to save some money and buy a laptop from Apple, I've heard that Mac OS is better than Windows, but I do not know under what terms. On Windows, you can run a much greater number of games than the Mac OS so what the operating system is better than Windows, Apple computers, and why are 50% if not more more expensive than PC class computers

For now I'm using the new Windows 8 Home Edition which I bought a month ago, I missed a bit of good old start menu and that it can not be reset in place of Modern UI, but I going to get used to it.

It's the operating system that's expensive. Just imagine it costs $800. Laughing The high price helps keep customers low enough that the service experience is generally better, with things like less wait time and faster turn around. (In the states, at least)

OS quality is subjective, I prefer OSX because I find it less distracting, more clearly organized and with better tools for managing my files. More to the point, I like a lot of the music software that is OSX only and for audio use the foundations of OSX are more stable, reliable and flexible out of the box. I dual boot to use the one remaining windows only program I enjoy.

There are ways to run OSX on your own hardware, but I have the money to support the software and hardware engineers at Apple who I feel do good work. I hope they are well compensated.

Hopefully, in the future we will have enough power and battery life to spare to run multiple operating systems slide by side, without third party emulation.

I agree, if you like games windows makes more sense, especially for a custom desktop system.

Two operating systems at once? Sounds weird to me. I guess if you want to play games or use a program that's only available in one operating system it could be okay. But there's Wine ( and similar solutions for that. ) It runs slower, but I think the overhead of two operating systems would slow it down even more.

It's better to find an OS you like, then maybe dual boot for those few programs your favorite operating system runs.

And as for games; Linux ( with the upcoming Steam release ) and OS X has had Steam for a few years. Not saying every game will be cross-platform. But I think more and more games will be. At least I hope so.

Just curious; what music software are you referring to? Don't most of it run on Windows?
